Cover for Episode Ten of the Chilldown Period!

Here's the cover for my next podcast!

Why trains? 'Cause I like em... no other reason. The train featured is a GP-38 which runs for our local Class 3 railroad which runs through town. (I did add some motion to the picture as well)

The next podcast will feature less of me, and more of the music. That is to place more of the focus on the music, because that's what makes the podcast the podcast. Later on today you'll get to hear it!

Stay tuned and ENJOY!

Creative Commons Choosings - 2 December 2009

The hyperactive one is back!

You know what, it's time for me to put my blog where my mouth is! If I like these artists so much, then I should write a post and share with all of you their sound and their style. One thing they all share in common: they're Creative Commons Artists.

I'll also give a shout out to their labels while in the process!

I'm starting off with an artist I featured on Episode Nine of the Chilldown Period. She's one half of the electropop duo Bisexual Cyborg. Emily in Love brings to us wonderful folktronica with an indie pop twist, and she's also a connoisseur of Dr. Pepper (those two have got to be connected somehow!). Her album, "Let's Pretend We're in Love", is full of fulfilling lyrics and tender beats. My favorite track from the album is "Half a Chance"* with its catchy guitar sample and Emily's distinct vocals hooking you into her style. (Corpid Netlabel)

My next pick has got to be DJ Racy AJ's "Rust Tree LP". Cinematic angst (as IndieFeed would say) mixed with happening hooks and determined melodies. This album is a HEAD NODDER from the "Priming" all the way to "No Where." DJ Racy AJ comes to you on the Dusted Wax Kingdom netlabel. This is one of the albums which helps me get through my day cleaning buildings. The review from the Dusted Wax website says:

Right from the forgotten underground outskirts of Kiev comes the debut album from Dj Racy A.J. Trippy-phat big beats run like dark shadows across dusty walls of melancholic ambient sounds, to create another original soundtrack for the real hard life. If you love Cujo's "Adventures In Foam" you'll definitely dig this album as the sun, the moon and the stars!

Sticking with the Dusted Wax Kingdom label, we'll pay a visit to Nienvox and the release "Sphere [EP]". This is a tender (not the best word to use, but the only one which comes to mind) mix of mellow beats and pristine oscillations going from jazz to orchestrations to eastern melodies. If you play your cards right you'll get to hear one of Nienvox's songs on my next podcast... but you have to be good, okay? If you want to have a special evening with a certain someone; pull this gem up in your iTunes library and let the night unfold.

Finally, I'm going to take you back to the Just Plain Sounds label and to one of my favorite twitterers I follow (yes, there are a few, but this one has some great 140s). Sleaze's blog you'll find linked on my side bar, and you'll find yourself hooked to both his lyrics and his beats. Straightforward and passionate, Sleaze draws you in and plays to the artistic and logical parts of your brain! Here we'll pay more attention to his beat tape "A Rose, By Another Name." As I said before about DJ Racy AJ, I'll say about Sleaze's release - it's a pure HEAD NODDER! Sleaze says about this album:

This beat tape was a mental process I had with myself. It is a project of growth, determination and renewed spirits. A rose is formed, it grows, bears seeds, and dies, only to be reborn to repeat the cycle. But in this “death”, it is multiplied many times over. It becomes a bush, full of life and luster. So my musical “death” and “rebirth” is captured in this project.
I hope you enjoy these picks! If you have anymore which you think I should include for a future posting, hit me up at ublfsounds@gmail.com.

*Update/Correction 6 December 2009: Emily let me know that the vocalist on '"Half a Chance" is Pia, one of a couple singers I've worked with on the project.' (from her post in the comments section)

Chilldown Period - Episode Nine - 12 November 2009

Second Thursday.
Month is November.
A New Podcast awaits you!

Episode Nine of the Chilldown Period is here folks, and more great music awaits your listening pleasure. We're staying mostly in the downtempo range with some midtempo insertions.

And, of course, it isn't a Chilldown Period without the great tune "Albania" by the Ambienteer. Follow him on twitter... don't argue, just DO IT!

The weather is turning cooler (today, the 12th here in my part of Idaho it snowed again - I don't always know why that makes me happy), keeping up with the chillness of the tunes.

Correction: Liquid Stranger's album is actually called "
The Intergalactic Slapstick".

I don't have much more to add, but here's a listing of the music for this Episode:

Dulceflur is a talented bloke! Check out music he created for a video on the North Sea. The music ebbs and flows as the sea swells and sinks. Soothing stuff!

Wrap Your Ears Around This Artist - 13 October 2009

UPDATE (25 Oct 2009) - Just Plain Ant's album released (not just a few songs, but the full length joint): head here for the goods!

After appearing on three podcasts, it's about time I wrote a longer post about him.

And if you haven't heard me give props about the artist whom I'm about to speak about, then let me introduce you.

Here he is, my Wrap Your Ears Around This Artist: Just Plain Ant.

I was introduced to the sounds which Just Plain Ant makes after reading a tweet by BlocSonic. I clicked on the link, and found a collaborative album by two Just Plain Sounds Artists: JPA and Oh Bliv called Black Soap.

One rotation of songs and I was hooked. (I'll admit, I can get a little excited about artists and their music - maybe not Miley Cyrus fan crazy, but if I'm not medicated I don't promise anything - throw in a track called Dean & The Disco Rhinoceros | enough said).

As I've said before - listening to Just Plain Ant's sounds (throw in Oh Bliv as well) send you back to an older era of soul, funk and r&b mixed with nice, tight hip hop beats to combine the best of both worlds.

Then the New Black hit archive.org and the story continued. Thirty-four songs, fifty minutes - just right but yet not enough. I found myself getting pulled into a mix then it shifted into another tune. Just as soon as you start to complain, you'll forget the gripe and start grooving to the next sound. If you want to hear a few highlights - check out Born and Raised in It, Della Reese, Acid Lullabye, Clusterfunk and In My Reeboks.

Just Plain Ant has been gracious to allow me to use his music on my podcasts, and for this I'm very thankful. When he cued me in on a new project he was working on and said that I could use one of his songs for it, I jumped at the chance.

Intro Songs About SomethingIt is a new downtempo project by the man of the hour which reminds me of groups such as Aim, Cities of Foam, Zero 7, Abraham (Blue for the Most), Bauchklang, and I don't think I'm stretching when I say Royksopp's Melody A.M.

To add to my reminiscing, the music is just as soulful, just as meaningful, and just as smooth(ful, uh... I'm making words up again). Nifty a capella sounds help start off the album on "The Day Has Begun," then the longing sounds found on "Wanderlust," moving into gorgeous lyrics eloquently sung in "Peace Be Unto All of Mankind," finished up with nice 'n' jazzy laced gems found on "We Are, Now" and "Fly Over Me."

Here's a taste:

The first five songs from the project were released last week, and more will be released the first Tuesday of each month through January 2010. Check out his bandcamp site for more details.

Just Plain Ant: mixing history with modernity, spanning the realm from hip hop to downtempo, and helping keep your life chilldown.

The Chilldown Period - Episode Eight - Music for the General - 8 October 2009

It's that time of the month for yet another release of the Chilldown Period by yours truly - the UBLF. We've got fourty-six minutes (plus) of some grooved out tunes for you from some dang good artists!

First up, as always, I'd like to thank he ambienteer for allowing me to use one of his songs.  Up next are some artists/individuals who helped me find artists willing to allow me to use their music: HipGnosis, Kieron James, Auditory Canvas, Solipsistic Nation, and Just Plain Ant

This podcast is dedicated to my friends' little boy who recently underwent surgery, and whom I've nicknamed "the General." He's an adorable five month old whose cheeks hide his chin. His hazel (for now) eyes are always searching and his laugh will tear down the thickest of walled hearts! Here's to getting better, General!

Now to the list o' artists:
